This week was (mostly) quiet and warm. With rising temperatures, we had to find new ways to keep the boat fresh, especillay on the days we worked.
Playing hide and seek with the wind
On our sail from Kefalonia to Lefkada, we had everything from 30 knots to no wind and constantly changing wind directions. Of course, the numerous islands impact the flow of the air and you just have to deal with what you get.
On the other hand, this mountainous landscape provides beautiful sights on the way.
Tranquil bay / Vliho bay
Next to the town of Nidri, there is a large protected bay. We enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing stay here.
At first, when we reached the entrance of the bay, it was full with boats that had sought refuge during the strong winds. We snuck between the boats until the south end of the bay to find a spot.
We anchored in Vliho bay which is the south part of the bay and a little quieter.
Because of the very warm temperatures, we bought canvases that we attach to the boom or on the sides of the bimini. The material lets the wind go through but creates protection from the sun.
Refreshing waterfall
To strech our legs, we walked to the waterfall near Nidri one morning.
Because of the many trees and the cold water coming from the mountains, it was actually a refreshing hike.
Mayday in the fog
On the southeast corner of Lefkada, we experienced fog. Not something we expected in Greece. Though, when the moist air is pushed up against the cooler sides of the mountains, it reaches its dew point and creates advection fog.
Initially, we wanted to visit the Papanikolis caves, but the closer we got, the thicker the fog.
Therefore, we decided to change destination. Suddenly, we hear a mayday on the VHF radio for a position less than 2 nm from us. A motorboat without AIS had lost his engine and was drifting in the fog. We called to mention that we would be there in about 20 minutes. When we arrived on site, another ship better equipped for towing took care of the boat in distress. By the time the towing line was installed, the fog had lifted, revealing the coastline and several other boats in the vicinity that maybe had come to help as well.
Wind fun (Vasiliki)
On the south coast of Lefkada, we anchored one night in the bay of Vasiliki, near Apollonioi. In the afternoon, the katabatic winds are quite strong here (up to 32 knots), for the great pleasure of wind sports enthusiasts.
