Timing the passage for the eruptions

The Aeolian Islands represent a beautiful sailing area of seven volcanic islands. Our main goal was to view the spectacular red eruptions of the Stromboli. We had already climbed the Stromboli 14 years ago. But by the time we reached the top, a thick cloud had formed and we could only hear but not see the eruptions. This time, we wanted to witness how the volcano expels lava into the sky.

Vulcano

Our first stop was Vulcano, the most southerly island. The winds were light and we were flying the spi. We made this short video showing the characteristic silhouettes of 3 famous volcanos: Vulcano, Etna and Stromboli.

We anchored in porto di Ponente.

To spare Yan’s knee, we did not climb up to the sulfuric crater of Vulcano but did a nice walk to the Valley of the Monsters instead.

Lipari

Our next destination was Lipari, on which is located the main city of the Aeolian islands and the major ferry port. We spent a few days in Lipari while the weather was mixed, including thunderstorms and heavy rain.

There are vineyards on the Aeolian islands and we enjoyed a nice tasting in the Enoteca. The best known vine is Malvasia.

As the weather improved, we continued north along the coast of Lipari.

Panarea

Our next stop was Panarea. Conveniently located at the south of the island, two anchorages offer hiking opportunities with views on beautiful rock formations and a prehistoric stettlement.

Stromboli by night

The anchoring options on Stromboli are limited and exposed to swell. We therefore devised a plan to reach Stromboli at sunset and watch the eruptions from the boat while drifting. We chose a night with clear skies.

Not bad for pictures taken from a moving boat!

Another surprise appeared in the sky that night.

Once we were done with the show, we started an overnight passage to Sicily, where we reached Capo d’Orlando in the morning.

Next week, we will welcome Romaine and her friend Alex aboard Fabule. We might come back to these special islands with them…

A suivre…

Superbe! 🤩 chanceux!

On s’appelle bientôt!
