As we continue our progression north along the islands of the Outer Hebrides, we were charmed by the area of Harris. We appreciated the scenic landscapes ansd animated wildlife.
Yet another Tarbert
Taking advantage of a period of favorable weather, we moved north along the island of Uist.

Once we reached the marina of East Loch Tarbert, we stayed several days to explore the area.

The golden road (East side)
On the harbour master’s suggestion, we used the public bus for an instructive tour of North Harris. The discovery started with a first bus that took us down the rocky east coast.

This scenic route is called the Golden road. It is a winding single track road that makes its way between lakes and lochs.

The sound of Harris (south)
The bus stopped in Leverburgh, where the ferry crosses to the island of Uist. The sound of Harris, one of the rare passages to reach the West side of the Hebrides, is a notoriously treacherous stretch of water with numerous skerries, shoals and currents, making for challenging navigation.

While waiting for the next bus, we walked along the south coast and watched the wildlife.

Sandy beaches (West side)
The next bus arrived and took us back via the west coast of Harris. The scenery changed completely with a succession of sandy beaches and turquoise water.

We got off the bus and walked from one beach to the next.

Gastronomy in Scalpay
This small island near Tarbert offers shelter to a fleet of fishing boats as well as to passing sailboats.

If you are looking for a nice meal, the North Harbour Bistro is the place for a gastronomic experience with a refined menu and winelist.

In good company in Mariveg
Our last stop was the anchorage of Mariveg, where we spent the night in the company of birds, sheep and a curious seal.
