Soon after our arrival in the Balearic Islands a winter storm caused strong winds and a temperature drop. While it is usual to have more wind and a cool climate in February, Borrasca Juliette put Majorca, the most affected island, on red alert: accumulation of snow in the Sierra Tramontana (1 m. in 24 h.), heavy rainfall and wind (with speed up to 117 km/h) caused trouble and damage. Fortunately, we were safely tucked further west on Ibiza, in Sant Antoni de Portmany.
Windy crossing
The conditions were calm when we left Cartagena and continued east along the Spanish coast.
After rounding Cabo de Palos, we started our overnight crossing to Ibiza.
The wind picked up during the night (constant 27-30 knots) and was still about 20 knots when it was time to maneuver into the berth. After a few attempts to a narrow spot, the marineros directed us to a larger berth where the challenge was to avoid a launching ramp. The captain had to work hard but all ended up well.
Ghost town
The island of Ibiza is famous for its lively nightlife. During the summer, beach parties and night clubs attract thousands of tourists who enjoy themselves to the rythm of popular DJs and music stars. But in February, the season has not started yet. Sant Antoni looks a little like a ghost town, with large billboards still advertising New Year’s Eve. On the bright side, we have the beaches to ourselves.

Super ! Minorque is good too. Sylvain.
On va certainement y aller aussi car notre but est de traverser vers la Corse. A suivre…
J’ai hate a 12 degres! Mais on a eu de la belle neige et il fait doux avec un beau soleil et 3 degres.. une belle semaine de relache!
Conditions parfaites pour les sports d’hiver, profitez bien!
Hi you two! Wonderful to follow your travels! We have friends that stay the winter in Mahon, also Ibiza. So if you go there say hi to Tim and Jules on sv Mojito 💕 We’re heading back to the boat March 16, can’t wait! Love from us to you
It is very likely that we will go to Mahon, because our aim is to cross to Corsica. We will keep an eye for sv Mojito. We are curious so see where the winds will take you this year. Have fun back on Bushpoint!
