Depressions continue to sweep the French Atlantic coasts. We made a small progress and reached Lorient. Fortunately, the forecast looks better for next week. Fingers crossed.
Amazing skies
For our navigation from Quiberon to Lorient, we had a succession of sunshine and showers. We were in awe of the magnificient yet menacing skies.
Kernevel and La Base (Lorient)
There are several marinas in Lorient. We stayed in Kernevel. From there, a nice walk along the shore takes you to La Base.
A former submarine base built by the Germans during WWII, Lorient La Base has developped into “Sailing Valley”. Offshore racing teams prepare their boats here. Recently, the Transat Jacques Vabre (La route du café) made a stop to let the storms pass. We hid from the bad weather in the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly.
To our surprise, we saw Fabule’s big sister, Ulvetanna. This Boreal 70 is the 100th produced by the shipyard and was launched this summer. What makes it special is the fact that it is the biggest model of the brand.
Trip to town (Lorient)
The history of Lorient began when the East India Company obtained land from Louis XIV to establish its installations. The Royal Navy also established itself and produced numerous boats in the military arsenal.
The watchtower was built to monitor the approach of East India Company ships entering the harbor of Lorient in order to avoid smuggling operations.
The Second World War led to the almost total destruction of the city, the German army having chosen the city to build the largest submarine base of the time.
