If you consider that Italy has the shape of a boot, the region of Calabria is forming the toes. On top of the big toe lies the Coasta Viola, where we spent the week in a small marina near Palmi. The beaches of the area are inviting, however the temperatures for a swim are not quite there yet.
Boat life
In this relaxed atmosphere, we appreciated pizza with delicious crusts and (for Silvia) gelato stands. We cooked on the barbecue for the first time, now that we have the appropriate connectors for the gas. Yan set out to study the use of a sextan for navigation. Of course, we also took care of boat projects, like the maintenance of the winches and climbing up the mast to realign the wind indicator.
Well protected behind the breakwater, we were not affected by the wind warning active over Calabria.
Overlooking the sea (Palmi)
The town of Palmi is located higher up on the side of Mount Sant’Elia. It is placed on terraces from which you can enjoy an exceptional panorama of the surrounding mountains and the sea. We took the bus for a grocery run and did a little exploration at the same time.
From Palmi, it is a daysail to our next destination: Vulcano (Aeolian islands).

Et le rêve continue en vous lisant… J’adorerais faire le circuit que vous faites un jour. J’espère… L’Italie en bateau… Quelle température avez-vous en ce moment. Il semble faire vraiment beau sur vos photos. Et la mer ? A combien de degrés ? Vous nous épatez avec votre tour à métaux. Ca ne doit pas être très courant sur un bateau. Incroyable Yan ! Pendant que Silvia se la coule douce. 🙂
De notre côté, nous commençons à “frétiller” et Groucho a toute notre attention, bien qu’il soit toujours au sec. Jean-Yves a enlevé l’auto-collant noir car même en Norvège, le chocolat fondait dans les placards. 🙂 C’est vous dire qu’il était urgent de faire ce qu’il fallait pour adapter Groucho aux fortes chaleurs qu’il va connaître à partir de juillet. Donc la coque de Groucho est maintenant toute blanche 🙁 et pour l’instant nous ne sommes pas très inspirés pour la moindre décoration… Ca va peut-être venir. Nous changeons également la capote pour une couleur plus claire et l’adapter aux fortes chaleur. Et pour finir, nous installons un bimini ! Tout ceci pour vous dire que si vous nous croisez, vous ne risquez pas de nous reconnaître… Ha ha ha. Bonne continuation à vous trois. De grosses bises. Chantal & Jean-Yves
La température de l’eau est autour des 16 degrés. Du coup, les baigneurs sont encore rares. Nous nous réjouissons de suivre vos aventures transatlantiques. Il est clair que Groucho ne se ressemblera plus après ce ‘make over’. Groucho va voyager icognito 🙂
Hi, looks like you’re having a good time and it’s both nice and interesting to follow your sailing 🙂 We’re starting to sail Brittany on Wednesday and hopefully we’ll get som nice sprig weather with some sunshine, that would be great.
