On the way to Gibraltar

What a good feeling to be on the move again. After finalising our boat projects and saying goodbye to Cadiz, we set sail to Gibraltar.

Fabule check up

During our stay in Cadiz, we completed a lot of items on our to-do list. It is the advantage of staying in the same place for a longer period. The most visible is the new anchor. We also created shades for the big windows in the doghouse that we will fix with suction cup hooks. They will be so much more adapted than the car windshields we currently use.

Last impressions of Cadiz

The marina in Cadiz (Puerto America) is located about 30 minutes from the town center. Therefore, our foldable bikes came very handy. We loved the beautiful path around the peninsula and the lively town center.

Set sail to Gibraltar

The distance from Cadiz to Gibraltar (80 nm) is a little much for a daysail. In addition, we needed to time the arrival at the entrance of the narrow strait right to avoid having the current against us. In this video, we share impressions of this overnight passage.

We will stay a few days in Gibraltar and meet friends before continuing our journey.

Hi Silvia

You might remember – we met in Tregiuer just as you were setting up your lovely new boat which you kindly showed us as we were looking at the 47.2 . Congrats on your blog and fab bird photos. It was great to see you made it to Norway as you’d hoped. Your boat work updates are interesting and it was nice to see Jan’s work room fully installed. We were curious as to why you changed your anchor?

Hi Susie,
I changed the anchor because of two reasons:
1) we are new at anchoring and we had a couple of draging alarms shorting our nights in Scotland due to muddy grounds which did not hold well,
2) The anchor that we bought from Boreal, Manson Supreme 60 lbs, is the recommanded anchor for 14m / 16-17 tons boat, but the 47.2 bow roller can also acommodate the 80 lbs version of this anchor, hence I hope to have a better grip on slippery or muddy bottoms than with the 60 lbs.

But we have yet to test it, the weather being a bit breezy these days in the Gibraltar area we are tucked in a Marina. I will report the next anchorage in our blog.

All the best to you and please give our regards to John too.

Yan and Silvia.

Thank you Silvia. We will be interested to hear !

We missed you by just little bit in Scotland but we are going to be up there again this year so not going South just yet but I hope we can meet again before too long.
